2026 Hurricane Season Remains Calm as Dolly Fades

The 2026 hurricane season, thus far, has been a far cry from the intense activity that typically characterizes these months. With Tropical Storm Dolly now a mere low-pressure system, the Atlantic basin has yet to see the formation of a single hurricane. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports that Dolly, once a tropical storm, has weakened significantly and is expected to bring only rain and thunderstorms to the Florida area as it moves northward.

The absence of hurricanes in the Atlantic can be attributed to the powerful influence of El Niño, a weather pattern characterized by warmer-than-average ocean temperatures in the Pacific. This year, the world is experiencing the strongest El Niño on record, which has a varied impact across the globe but is particularly known for diminishing hurricane activity in the Atlantic.

As of mid-August, the hurricane season has been marked by a mere four tropical storms, a stark contrast to the five tropical storms and one hurricane that had formed by this time last year. The NHC data indicates that the tropical storms that have formed have been notably weak, with three of the four not lasting more than 48 hours.

The National Hurricane Center is currently monitoring two potential systems off the southeastern U.S. One is a small area of thunderstorms off the Texas and Louisiana coasts, while the other is the remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly. Despite these developments, there is no immediate threat of a hurricane forming from these systems.

El Niño, which typically activates when parts of the Pacific Ocean near the Equator get warmer than usual, is measured by the temperature of the Pacific Ocean water. A rise of half a degree Celsius above normal is considered a weak El Niño, while a rise of 2 degrees Celsius is classified as very strong. This year's El Niño index is expected to be unprecedented, exceeding 3 degrees Celsius above normal, according to Columbia University's International Research Institute for Climate and Society.

The last time El Niño reached such extreme levels was during the 2015-2016 season, when temperatures reached 2.75 degrees Celsius above normal. The record-breaking El Niño of 2026 is expected to have a significant impact on weather patterns worldwide, but for now, it is providing a respite from the typical hurricane activity in the Atlantic.

The calm weather conditions have been welcomed by many, as the Atlantic basin has been experiencing a relatively quiet hurricane season. However, experts warn that this does not mean the season is over. The hurricane season typically lasts until November, and conditions can change rapidly.

The calm weather in the Atlantic is a stark contrast to other parts of the world, where extreme weather events have been more frequent. For instance, Nepal has been experiencing a heat wave, with temperatures soaring to dangerous levels. The unusual weather patterns are being attributed to the supercharged El Niño, which is causing disruptions in weather systems across the globe.

In the United States, the Trump administration has been taking steps to address climate change and prepare for extreme weather events. The administration has allocated funds for improving infrastructure and developing new technologies to mitigate the impact of climate change.

Despite the calm conditions in the Atlantic, the 2026 hurricane season serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for extreme weather events. As the season continues, experts will be closely monitoring the Atlantic basin for any signs of increased activity.

The calm weather conditions in the Atlantic are a welcome relief for many, but it is important to remain vigilant and prepared for the remainder of the hurricane season. With the strong El Niño expected to continue influencing weather patterns, the possibility of an intense hurricane season cannot be entirely ruled out.
