Marinette County Dispatch received an iPhone crash notification around 10:55 p.m. on August 29, alerting them to the coordinates on Highway G in the Town of Lake. A short time later, another call was received reporting a single-vehicle crash near Loomis Road.
The investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff's Office revealed that Landen J. Englund, a 16-year-old from Menominee, Michigan, was driving south on County Highway G when he failed to negotiate a curve and veered into the ditch, striking a tree. Englund sustained fatal injuries in the crash.
The front-seat passenger, 17-year-old Princeton J. Welty from Crivitz, also succumbed to his injuries. Two other passengers, one of whom was ejected from the vehicle, were seriously injured and were transported to receive medical treatment.
The sheriff's office has indicated that speed was a contributing factor in the crash, and the investigation is ongoing. The tragic incident has sparked a wave of concern and speculation within the community.
Sheriff Randy Miller of the Marinette County Sheriff's Office addressed the public through a Facebook post, clarifying the release of the teenagers' names. Miller explained that the information was released after multiple notifications were made, as social media often spreads inaccurate information without official confirmation.
The Menominee Area Public School District posted a message to families and staff on August 30, expressing their sorrow over the loss of a former student who died in the crash and the serious injury of another former student. Superintendent Drew Buyarski emphasized the profound impact the loss has had on the school community and announced that additional mental health professionals and support resources would be available for students when they return to school on Monday.
Princeton Welty, one of the victims, was remembered by his school community through his participation in basketball. The Crivitz School District, which begins classes on September 8, has not yet released a statement on the incident.
