Authorities in Montgomery County are turning to the local community for assistance in tracking down two masked individuals responsible for an armed robbery at a retail establishment in Hatboro. The Hatboro Police Department launched an active investigation following the late-night incident at the Hatboro Smoke Shop, urging anyone who may recognize the perpetrators or have relevant information to contact detectives immediately.
The robbery unfolded late Monday night just before 10:30 p.m. at the smoke shop location situated along York Road. According to law enforcement officials, two male suspects, both dressed entirely in black apparel, entered the commercial premises while concealing their faces, immediately drawing the attention of the lone employee on duty.
Upon seeing the masked individuals enter the retail space, the clerk behind the counter instructed them to remove their face coverings as a basic security measure. Rather than adhering to the worker's instruction, the situation escalated rapidly when the suspects made their criminal intentions clear.
Hatboro Police Chief Mark Ruegg stated that one of the male suspects suddenly drew a handgun, brandishing the firearm directly toward the employee while issuing demands for immediate cash from the store register. Recognizing the immediate danger posed by the armed assailant, the store clerk chose to cooperate fully with the demands. Chief Ruegg highlighted that the clerk's decision to remain calm and comply was the safest possible response under the circumstances. The chief noted that because the employee surrendered the cash without resistance, both suspects collected the money and quickly exited the store without harming anyone inside.
Investigators confirmed that the two assailants managed to flee the commercial property with several hundred dollars in stolen currency.
